Heard at work today: "Until someone has total gender surgery, they only count as cross dressers. I took a psychology class, so I know I'm right." And "Tranny is a technical term~! Why are you mad about this?"

And of course one of them had to do the gagging and choking sound effects when she left, complete with OMG THAT'S A GUY!

Dude, no. She looks like a woman, she's dressed like a woman, and yes while she clearly has that deep husky guy voice going on, I think it's pretty fucking clear how she id's. I try not to talk to any of the people I work with about anything but work, since it inevitably pisses me off, but it's nice to know the guys are such raging jackasses. Keeping most of the people I interact with to online only really skews with the way I'm viewing the world. You think most people are at least kinda excepting, then BAM! You come out as an atheist, and they start calling you Terrorist. In a purely joking way, God don't' take it so srsly I was just joking~!

She seems really nice, and interested in making her own jewelry, my fave kind of customer, let's hope she comes back~

arghhhhh. People are so dumb.

My husband IDs as a tranny (and female, but it's kind of complicated and idk if you know the backstory), but I sure as hell don't use that term unless I'm talking to him because it's like any other insulting term that has been reclaimed: if you're not in that group, it's insulting by that very fact.

does that make sense?

Yeah totally, I don't use it at all since I'd have no way of knowing if the other person would be offended by it or not. It's just easier to be cautious then offend someone. When he said it, I hit him with the clipboard, more out of shock then anything else. The more vocal of the guys is going back to Austin on Monday and the other one isn't very smart anyway. And I don't work with him a lot anyway.

I always feel like I should correct the erroneous preconceived notions people have, but I hate confrontation and everyone at work does not give a shit at all.

And no, I don't know that back story. Sounds complicated indeed.

Uuuuuugh.

Tranny is NEVER acceptable. I know some folks are trying to "reclaim" it, but that's definitely not everyone. Tranny is on par with faggot and the n-word as far as offensiveness goes... and personally, it makes my skin crawl.

The only really safe umbrella term is "transgender" and even then that's not a label you just want to throw onto someone.

After reading this post, I very much felt like this.

Yes, yes exactly. I used that same example, and that's when the black guy was all, no no, tranny is a technical term~

The woman in question was African-American too, which kind of makes it worse.
